On Sunday, 17th October Sir John Houghton had taken our service before flying out to South Africa.  He had chosen as his theme, "The whole church, taking the whole gospel, to the whole world".

This was the theme of the Third Lausanne Congress 2010.  Over 4,000 leaders from 200 nations had gathered together in Cape Town to confront issues of our time as they relate to the future of the Church and world evangelization.

Sir John had been invited to attend and to speak on "The science of Global Climate Change.  Facing the issues.  What are the issues?"

When Sir John returned from South Africa, he talked to the members of the church about his visit to the Lausanne Congress.

"Being able to participate in Lausanne 3 in Cape Town during the last week of October was a wonderful experience.
About 5000 Christian leaders from 198 countries were there, two thirds from Africa, Asia and south America, 60% under 50 and one third women. Many of the meetings were relayed to venues around the world enabling about 100,000 to watch and listen.
The Africans were wonderful hosts.  They show so much enthusiasm and joy about their faith in singing, dancing and helping in so many ways.
We were very sorry that about 250 Chinese Christians, representing what is now one of the world's largest churches, were not allowed to leave China.

A main theme of the Congress was "The whole church, taking the whole gospel, to the whole world." The Congress rejoiced in the great growth of the church of Christ especially in Africa, Asia and South America and renewed its Covenant to work to take the good news of Jesus to all those who have still not heard. It also recognised the big changes taking place in the world and the need for Christians to be involved with the problems of global poverty, disease and the ecological crisis.

My attendance at the Congress was  particularly to raise awareness of the environmental crisis and human induced climate change and I was encouraged by the willingness of  the world Christian community seriously to engage with these issues."
